Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about BIOL 107
1. What books do I need to buy for this course?
Required: Biological Science, 3rd ed. and Reading Primary Literature.
Optional: Practicing Biology, 3rd ed.
We have arranged with the publisher to receive all three texts as a value package for the same cost as the basic textbook. This package will be available at both the on-campus bookstore or Patty’s University Bookstore just off-campus. The ISBN for the package is 0321596536. Note: If you buy books online or from other sources, you will not receive the publisher’s discount and may end up paying more. I recommend you review the bookstore’s prices first.
2. Can I buy a previous edition of the textbook?
Yes, but it’s a bad idea. There are substantial changes between editions, and all assigned readings and problem sets will be based on the current version. If you choose to use an out-of-date textbook, you’ll need to borrow a friend’s book at least once a week to look up assigned problems, learn material not present in your version, etc. I know that textbooks are expensive, but we’ll use it enough that it really is worth buying the current version. And if you continue on to 108, you’ll be using again in that course.
